What Is the Account Number in PayMyDoctor?
Your Account Number, sometimes called the Guarantor Number, Patient Account Number, or Account #, is a unique number your healthcare provider assigns in their billing system. It identifies your billing account and tracks your financial record with that provider.
In PayMyDoctor, your Account Number and Practice ID work together to find your bill. You can think of them as two keys: the Practice ID opens the right practice’s system, and the Account Number finds your account inside it.
Where Exactly to Find Your Account Number
Location 1: Near your name at the top
On many billing statements, you can find the Account Number right next to or just below your name in the patient information section at the top.
Location 2: Near the balance due
Some providers put the Account Number near the payment section, either next to or just above the “Amount Due” or “Total Balance” figures.
Location 3: Top right corner
In many standard billing statement formats, the Account Number appears in the top right corner inside a clearly labelled box.
Location 4: Bottom payment coupon
If your statement has a tear-off payment coupon at the bottom, the Account Number is often printed there. This is the part you would return with a paper check.
What it looks like:
- Usually 8 to 12 digits long.
- May include leading zeros. Enter them exactly as printed.
- Sometimes includes both letters and numbers. Enter exactly as shown.
- Longer than the Practice ID (4–7 digits).

Account Number vs Practice ID — Clear Comparison
| Account Number | Practice ID | |
|---|---|---|
| Identifies | You — the patient | Your healthcare provider |
| Assigned by | Your provider (to your billing record) | Veradigm (to the practice) |
| Typical length | 8–12 digits | 4–7 digits |
| Unique per patient? | ✅ Yes — different for everyone | ❌ No — same for all patients at that practice |
| Where on statement | Near patient name or balance | Near provider name or address |
The most common PayMyDoctor entry mistake is entering your Practice ID in the Account Number field, or vice versa. If you are unsure, the shorter number (4 to 7 digits) is usually the Practice ID. The longer number (8 to 12 digits) near your name is usually the Account Number.
What If You Can’t Find Your Account Number?
Step 1: Look at every labelled number on your statement
Check each section closely. Look for any number labelled “Account,” “Guarantor,” or “Patient” anywhere on the statement.
Step 2: Check a previous bill from the same provider
Your Account Number does not change on bills from the same provider. If you have an older statement, the Account Number will be the same.
Step 3: Try the number you think it might be
Type the number you think is your Account Number into PayMyDoctor. If it is wrong, you will see “account not found.” If it is correct, your bill balance will appear.
Step 4: Call the billing office
You can call your provider’s billing office to get your Account Number. They will ask for your name, date of birth, and date of service to confirm your identity. This is usually the quickest and most reliable way.
Frequently Asked Questions
No, your Account Number stays the same on all bills from the same provider. It will only change if you register as a completely new patient at that practice, which does not happen often.
No, your Medical Record Number is used for your medical care, while your Account Number is only for billing. These numbers come from different systems and serve different purposes.
In some cases, yes. Guest Pay may let you verify your identity using other patient details instead of an Account Number. Try using the Guest Pay option to see if your provider’s portal offers another way to verify.
Some providers use account numbers that include both letters and numbers. Please enter your account number exactly as it appears on your statement, using the same order of letters and numbers.
